Many athletes experience blood in the urine from time to time.
This can be visible to the naked eye (macroscopic) or only seen under a microscope (microscopic). Exercise-induced hematuria occurs after strenuous activity and resolves with rest. By definition, it is diagnosed in those with no underlying kidney problem or urinary tract disease. It most commonly occurs in runners who run more than 10,000 meters or 6 miles. The hydration status of the runner plays a factor in developing exercise-induced hematuria. The blood in the urine should clear within 72 hours. If it does not, you should see a nephrologist, a kidney doctor like myself who can evaluate the cause.
